Feed RR Kids

SCFDW involvement with Feed the Kids began in 2019 with affiliation with an organization by that name which was founded and continues in Albuquerque.   They provided an outline of the kinds of snacks that should go into snack packs for weekend delivery through the schools.  We supplied 30 to 40 snacks packs a week to two elementary schools.  Our focus has always been on Rio Rancho and kids without sufficient resources at home for food on the weekends.

Due to the changes in school activity that the pandemic caused, we shifted our emphasis from creating snack packs to donating money Rio Rancho Desert Program with gift cards.  This shift meant that we were no longer following the Feed NM Kids model founded by Holly Slade in Albuquerque

The Desert Program of Rio Rancho Public Schools consists of three schools:  The elementary school program is Desert Sunrise and is located on the campus of Enchanted Hills Elementary School.  The middle school, Desert Trails, is located on the campus of Eagle Ridge Middle School.  Desert Pathways is the high school program which is located close to Eagle Ridge Middle School.

During 2020 we supplied approximately $3,000 in gift cards to The Desert Program and to Colinas del Norte Elementary School.  Feed RR Kids has been associated with St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.  With the anticipated closing of St. Paul’s, the program has been moved to the Unitarian Westside Congregation.  This provides us with places to store food, room to assemble packets, and places to store boxes and other supplies.  They also are a nonprofit which allows donors to get a tax deduction.

The UU church is excited to partner with the Sandoval County Federation of Democratic Women.  If you are interested in becoming a supporter of Feed RR Kids, please send me your name and email and I will see that you receive regular updates.
